Haze Reduces Visibility in Central and Northern Maldives, Health Agency Warns

Environment ·
The Maldives Meteorology Office has reported that haze is currently affecting the central Maldives and the northern atolls, significantly reducing visibility. According to the Met Office, visibility in the northern atolls has dropped to approximately 2 kilometers due to smoke originating from neighboring countries, a phenomenon that occurs annually during the Iruvai monsoon season. The Met Office projects that this condition will persist for the next five days, particularly impacting the central and northern atolls. The impact of smoke was notable from early December last year, and officials indicate that the haze this February has lasted longer than in previous years. In response to the deteriorating air quality, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued a public advisory. The HPA warned that the haze poses both short-term and long-term health risks, including problems with the brain and nerves, diminished cognitive strength, and serious health issues during pregnancy. The agency also highlighted that the haze could hinder lung development in children and increase the risk of heart diseases and strokes. The HPA has called for special attention to health safety measures, advising individuals with respiratory system problems to stop outdoor activities such as playing sports and working out. They recommend that those with respiratory issues or allergies wear N-95 or similar masks, keep doors closed to prevent outside air from entering, and use air purifiers.
