HDC and MIT Launch Technical Training Program to Empower Maldivian Women

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and the Maldives Institute of Technology (MIT) have launched "Vilunveri Kanbalun," a joint initiative designed to empower women by providing them with essential technical and vocational skills. The program aims to foster self-reliance and confidence, reducing the need for external assistance for common household repairs. Following a successful pilot phase in 2023, the initiative has significantly expanded its scope this year. The current curriculum goes beyond the repair of household electrical appliances to include basic motorcycle maintenance, reflecting a growing demand for diverse technical competencies among women in the community. Public response to the call for applications was strong, with 264 women applying for the program. In a move to ensure maximum inclusivity, HDC confirmed that all applicants have been accepted into the training. The sessions, which began on June 5, are structured into multiple batches to ensure personalized instruction and manageable learning environments. Participants who successfully complete the rigorous training will be awarded certificates, validating their newly acquired skills. According to the partnership agreement between MIT and HDC, the primary goal is to bridge the technical knowledge gap, enabling women to handle domestic maintenance tasks with professionalism and ease. Looking ahead, the partnership intends to scale its impact. The agreement outlines plans to develop similar skill-building programs tailored for youth and persons with disabilities. By expanding the target demographic, HDC and MIT aim to create a more inclusive technical education landscape across the Maldives, ensuring that specialized vocational training is accessible to all marginalized groups regardless of gender or physical ability.
