HDC Breaks Ground on Integrated Sports Park in Hulhumalé Phase I
Politics ·
The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has launched construction of a new integrated sports park in Hulhumalé Phase I, directly responding to a long-standing community need for safe recreational spaces for children. The groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday was led by HDC Managing Director Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Ali Zuhair, with local parliamentary representatives Abdulla Shazeem and Hussain Shareef in attendance.
Located opposite the Container Park, the facility is slated for completion within four months. The park will feature an artificial turf futsal pitch and a three-on-three basketball court, designed to complement an existing community volleyball court. Officials emphasized that the project aims to support and enhance established recreational habits in the area rather than replace them.
The initiative was sparked by a grievance raised by a local resident over the lack of safe play areas. In a notable gesture, the corporation invited that resident to participate in laying the foundation stone, highlighting the project's community-driven origins. HDC stated that the park is part of a broader strategic priority to expand and improve sports infrastructure across the Hulhumalé region, which has seen rapid residential growth.
