HDC Transfers Land for Maldives' Largest Mosque in Hulhumalé Grand Project

Politics ·
The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has officially transferred the land designated for the Hulhumalé Grand Mosque to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments. Set to become the largest mosque in the Maldives, the project is envisioned as a landmark Islamic complex serving future generations. The transfer was formalized during a ceremony on June 10, where the land handover agreement was signed by Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, and HDC Managing Director, Brigadier General (Retired) Ali Zuhair. Strategically located between Hulhumalé Phase II and Phase III, the development will go beyond a traditional place of worship. Minister Shaheem noted that the site will evolve into a comprehensive Islamic center, featuring a Quran Museum and various religious and educational facilities to preserve the nation's cultural heritage. The project was first announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during his presidential address earlier this year. To secure the necessary funding, the Ministry has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Saudi Arabia's Al-Rajhi company, ensuring the financial viability of the massive construction effort. Construction is slated to begin in September this year, timed to coincide with the historic commemoration of the 900th anniversary of the Maldives embracing Islam. This timing adds significant cultural weight to the project, linking a modern architectural milestone with the deep-rooted spiritual history of the archipelago. As the Maldives continues to expand its urban centers, the Hulhumalé Grand Mosque represents a strategic investment in religious infrastructure. By integrating education and curation through the planned museum, the complex aims to serve as both a spiritual hub and a beacon of Islamic identity for residents and visitors alike.
