Health Centre Upgrades in Haa Alifu Atoll Target Reduced Medical Travel for Residents
Politics ·
In a move to strengthen healthcare in remote regions, the Maldivian government has inaugurated a new extension to the Thuraakunu Health Centre and launched laboratory services at the Marandhoo Health Centre in Haa Alifu Atoll. This dual effort is part of a broader push to decentralize medical services and minimize the necessity for residents to undertake long journeys to the capital for essential care.
The Thuraakunu extension was officially opened in a ceremony graced by Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim and Economic Development and Trade Minister Mohamed Saeed, alongside officials from both ministries, the Thuraakunu Council, and health centre staff. Minister Nazim underscored the administration's commitment to prioritizing less populous islands. 'The government is giving priority to small populated islands and is expanding healthcare like other services. The results are being seen,' he stated.
The newly added section features an office area, a public health room, a storeroom, and a meeting room, designed to significantly improve the centre's functionality and patient experience. The existing facility, which operates for eight hours each day, includes a six-bed ward and existing laboratory services. Post-inauguration, Minister Nazim engaged with senior management to discuss and tackle current operational hurdles.
In a parallel development, the government has activated a new laboratory service at the Marandhoo Health Centre. This installation represents the 14th laboratory established under a nationwide project to expand diagnostic capabilities across the atolls. Minister Nazim, who also officiated the Marandhoo launch, pointed out the practical advantages for the community. Previously, Marandhoo residents had to travel to neighbouring Dhidhdhoo for basic diagnostic tests, but the new service allows them to conduct necessary examinations on their home island. The Marandhoo Health Centre, currently operational for 16 hours daily with a three-bed ward, is also earmarked for a new building as part of ongoing enhancements.
These inaugurations are integral to the government's ambitious objective of establishing laboratory services in 76 islands within the current year, a step towards equitable healthcare access throughout the Maldives and reducing the burden of medical travel for atoll communities.
