Health Minister Inaugurates New Laboratory Services in Raa Atoll Islands
Politics ·
Residents of Vaadhoo and Maakurathu islands in Raa Atoll can now access essential diagnostic services on-island, eliminating the need for travel. Minister of Health Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim officially inaugurated the new laboratory facilities in separate ceremonies on both islands.
The government is working to establish these basic healthcare services in all 76 islands currently without them by the end of this year. With these openings, Maakurathu and Vaadhoo become the 17th and 18th islands to receive the service under this national initiative.
Previously, residents faced significant challenges, having to send samples off-island or travel for basic laboratory testing. The new on-site facilities are expected to ease this burden and facilitate the early detection of diseases, supporting broader public health goals.
Following the inauguration ceremonies, Minister Ibrahim met with the senior management teams of the islands' health centers to discuss operational concerns and explore solutions. The government states that strengthening primary healthcare services is a key part of its efforts to build a healthier generation across the Maldives.
