The Minister of Health, Family and Welfare, Geela Ali, has called for equitable and long-term financial assistance to safeguard global public health security. Delivering a statement on behalf of Southeast Asian nations at the 79th Session of the World Health Assembly, Minister Ali emphasized that sustainable funding is critical to maintaining health stability amidst growing economic and political volatility. Despite current global instabilities, the statement highlighted that Southeast Asian countries have made significant strides in disease control, emergency preparedness, and the integration of digital health services. The region's success in improving health outcomes is further exemplified by the implementation of rigorous anti-tobacco policies targeting youth and the steady progress toward eradicating specific diseases. To further this progress, the statement outlined three primary priorities for global health reform. First, the region seeks to improve the ability of member states to pursue shared goals through evidence-based decision-making. Second, it called for the establishment of fair and sustainable financial mechanisms to support health security. Finally, the statement urged strengthened international cooperation to address both regional and global health crises. Minister Ali stressed that achieving these milestones requires decisive and effective global health leadership across all levels of the World Health Organization (WHO). She noted that such leadership must be grounded in a deeper understanding of diverse regional contexts to be truly effective. The address concluded with a call for international solidarity, urging nations to embrace shared responsibility and cooperation. By working together, the statement asserted, the global community can overcome systemic health challenges and ensure better health outcomes for populations worldwide.
