Health Minister Urges Sustainable Investment to Build Resilient Healthcare Systems

Sustainable strategic investment and global collaboration are essential to building resilient healthcare systems capable of weathering future crises, Minister of Health, Family and Welfare Geela Ali stated during the Unite Global Summit 2026. Speaking at the Global Leadership Dialogue in Manila, Philippines, Minister Geela emphasized that political leadership is critical in increasing health investments. She argued that sustained funding, rather than sporadic injections of capital, is the only way to truly strengthen public health services and primary healthcare infrastructure. The Unite Global Summit, held from August 3 to 4, serves as a high-level forum for international leaders to synchronize political commitments. The primary objective of the gathering is to improve global health outcomes by reinforcing the financial and structural foundations of health sectors worldwide. Beyond the summit's formal sessions, Minister Geela engaged in bilateral discussions with Priya Basu, the Executive Head of the Pandemic Fund. These talks centered on the Maldives' ongoing efforts to enhance national preparedness for future pandemics and strengthen early warning systems. During the meeting, Minister Geela highlighted the Maldives' strategic role on the Pandemic Fund's Governing Board. Representing the South-East Asia region, the Maldives continues to advocate for equitable resource distribution and collaborative preparedness strategies among neighboring nations. By participating in this summit, the Maldives reinforces its commitment to integrating sustainable financial models into its health sector, ensuring that primary care remains robust and accessible despite emerging global health threats.
