Health Protection Agency Opens Nominations for World No Tobacco Day Awards

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has opened nominations for its annual World No Tobacco Day Award, seeking to honor those leading the fight against nicotine addiction across the Maldives. The awards will coincide with the global observance of World No Tobacco Day on May 31. This initiative recognizes individuals, organizations, and state agencies that have made exceptional contributions to tobacco control. By celebrating these efforts, the HPA aims to reinforce the national commitment to public health and inspire further action toward a tobacco-free future for the archipelago. The awards highlight a diverse range of contributions, from grassroots advocacy and public education to the rigorous implementation of health policies. This year, the HPA is placing a specific emphasis on projects that align with the global theme: “Unmasking the appeal – countering nicotine and tobacco addiction.” Eligibility is open to any entity whose work has significantly mitigated the dangers of tobacco use within Maldivian society. The agency is looking for initiatives that have demonstrated a tangible impact on reducing addiction or protecting the community from the harms of nicotine. Interested parties and those wishing to nominate a deserving candidate must submit their applications via email to tobacco@hpa.gov.mv. The deadline for all submissions is May 2, providing a window for the agency to review nominations before the end-of-month celebrations.
