Heavy Rain Expected Across Maldives in Next 24 Hours; Authorities Urge Caution
Local News ·
The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has forecast heavy rain and strong winds across the country for the next 24 hours, with the northern and central atolls expected to be the most affected. In a statement issued Thursday night, the Met Office said that a strengthening of the western monsoon is bringing rain clouds from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, resulting in heavy showers and rough seas. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) have issued warnings urging all travelers, especially those at sea, to exercise extreme caution. The MNDF advised that vessels should be properly secured, life jackets worn, and communication systems checked before any voyage. The NDMA also urged the public to take precautionary measures to minimize potential damage to property. Authorities have asked people to avoid traveling at sea during adverse weather, particularly when yellow or orange warnings are in effect.
