The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has forecast heavy rain across the entire country in the coming week. According to the latest information released by the MET Office, heavy rain with thunderstorms is likely in various parts of the Maldives tonight as well. Winds are expected to be from the north and northeast in the northern atolls, and between 5 and 15 miles per hour elsewhere. However, the MET Office expects seas to be generally calm. The MET Office issued a white alert from 17:45 today until 23:45 tonight, covering the area from Ga. Atoll to Addu City. During this period, heavy rain with thunderstorms is expected in those atolls. The latest satellite image released by the office shows the Maldives completely covered in clouds, particularly the central Maldives and the southern atolls. According to the star calendar, the current period is the Hitha nakai of the Hulhangu (southwest) monsoon. This nakai runs from 4 October until 17 October, and during it winds are generally light and rainfall of varying intensity occurs on different days.
