Heavy Rain Floods Over 250 Homes in Kulhudhuffushi and Nolhivaranfaru

Local News ·
More than 250 homes in two islands of Haa Dhaalu Atoll have been flooded due to heavy rainfall, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). In a post on X today, the NDMA reported that flooding has affected over 60 homes in Nolhivaranfaru and more than 190 homes in Kulhudhuffushi City. The NDMA said that in Nolhivaranfaru, heavy rain has caused water to enter many homes, damaging belongings. However, residents have not yet had to be evacuated to safer areas. Police and residents are working together to fill sandbags, and rain is still falling on the island, according to the council. In Kulhudhuffushi City, the council is assessing the situation of the over 190 flooded homes. The council, police, MNDF Fire and Rescue Services, and MRC are working together to pump water out of the city, and the rain there has stopped. The NDMA said it is monitoring the situation in the affected islands and, together with the island councils, is making arrangements to provide humanitarian assistance to those in need. The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued an orange alert for islands in Haa Alifu and Haa Dhaalu atolls from last night until 6:15 this morning, and a white alert from 10:00 today until 3:00 pm for atolls from Haa Alifu to Alifu Dhaalu. The Met Office forecasts heavy rainfall with thunder and wind speeds of up to 40 miles per hour in these areas.
