Heritage Minister Announces National Initiative to Revive Islamic Values of Mutual Respect

Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Heena Waleed has emphasized that mutual respect is a fundamental pillar of a society built on Islamic principles, marking the launch of a new nationwide campaign titled 'Ih’thiraam Adhaa Kurumuge Qaumee Mash’roo’u' (National Respect Initiative). Speaking on Public Service Media’s 'Raajje Miadhu' programme, Minister Heena highlighted that the initiative seeks to restore the social cohesion and hospitality that have historically defined Maldivian society. The campaign aligns with a broader vision announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, focusing on the societal benefits and stability that arise when citizens treat one another with dignity. According to the Minister, the project is not merely a social campaign but a vital step in reclaiming the nation's identity. She stated that the government aims to re-instill the noble habits and Islamic etiquette—characterized by camaraderie, unity, and compassion—that were prevalent among previous generations of Maldivians. To ensure the initiative is inclusive and representative, the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage will conduct extensive consultations with civil society organizations and local associations. Minister Heena confirmed that the program will specifically engage all sectors of society, including persons with disabilities, to ensure no group is left behind in the effort to foster national unity. As part of the rollout, the government is developing a dedicated digital web portal. This platform will serve as a central hub for official documentation and a gallery for messages, photographs, and videos that showcase the spirit of respect within the community. The ministry is currently finalizing the design phase before opening the portal to the public.
