Heritage Minister Calls for National Unity to Safeguard Maldivian Sovereignty

The sustainability of national sovereignty depends on the "collective heart, hand, and help" of every citizen, Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Heena Waleed declared during celebrations marking the 61st Independence Day. Speaking at an official reception attended by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, and Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Minister Heena emphasized that true independence transcends legal bilateral agreements. She argued that the nation's sovereignty is rooted in the global recognition of its unique culture, identity, and enduring nationalism. Invoking the wisdom of late political analyst Ibrahim Shihab, the Minister urged Maldivians to rise above political divisions. She called for a spirit of cooperation and friendship, urging citizens to respond with "love and a pure heart" when called upon to serve the overarching interests of the state. Minister Heena provided a stark historical reminder, noting that past failures to maintain independence were often rooted in internal betrayal. She cited historical examples, such as the abandonment of Ali Rasgefaanu on the battlefield and the forced signing of the Protection Agreement, to illustrate that internal discord is the greatest threat to national freedom. Addressing the need for continuity, the Minister stressed the importance of passing both the triumphs and the "bitter experiences" of the past to younger generations. This transmission of history, she explained, is vital for ensuring the youth remain faithful to the national character in an increasingly interconnected global landscape. Concluding her address, the Minister lauded President Muizzu’s administration for prioritizing the protection of independence and the nurturing of nationalism. She described the effort to instill a deep sense of national identity as the "hardest, yet most vital task" in preserving the state's liberty. The ceremony commemorated the 1966 proclamation of the Maldives as an independent sovereign state, with the Minister ending her remarks with prayers for the nation's heroes and martyrs who fought for the freedom the country enjoys today.
