Judge Mohamed Niyaz, the longest-serving judge of the High Court, has retired from the judiciary after 23 years of dedicated service. The High Court announced that Tuesday marked his final day on the bench, where he attended several hearings and delivered rulings in two cases before stepping down. Niyaz also resigned from his role as Vice-President of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), citing health reasons, though no further details were disclosed. Niyaz began his judicial career as Magistrate of H.Dh. Vaikaradhoo Court and later served as Senior Magistrate of the South Thiladhunmathi region. He was appointed to the High Court in January 2018 and became its longest-serving judge. Holding a degree in Sharia and Law from the International Islamic University of Malaysia, Niyaz’s retirement comes amid significant changes in the judiciary this year, including a reshuffle of the Supreme Court bench and investigations into five High Court judges, one of whom has already resigned.
