Historical Research Guides National Respect Initiative to Revive Traditional Maldivian Values

World ·
The Maldives is conducting extensive historical research to identify ancestral traditions of respect and social harmony as part of the preparations for the nationwide National Respect Initiative. Historian Ahmed Shakir, a recipient of the Order of the Dignified Rule of the Dhiyamigili Dynasty, revealed that the project focuses on recovering the core values and qualities that historically distinguished Maldivian society. Speaking on PSM News’ Raajje Miadhu programme, Shakir explained that the research aims to understand how Maldivians traditionally interacted within social, health, and civic settings, noting that respect was once an ingrained psychological and natural practice for the people. According to Shakir, the initiative seeks to analyze how these practices have evolved over time and determine the best methods to revive them. He emphasized that the overall happiness and stability of society are deeply rooted in these positive traditions, particularly the cultural emphasis on looking after one another. Shakir asserted that the development of a well-organized and positive society is a prerequisite for the country's broader progress. He noted that establishing a functioning social fabric based on mutual respect would bring tangible gains and long-term advantages to the nation. The historian further highlighted that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has recognized the critical importance of restoring these values, describing the National Respect Campaign as a vital project for cultural preservation and social cohesion. To support the rollout of the initiative, a dedicated website is currently under development. This digital platform will serve as a central hub for the project, featuring educational messages, written content, and multimedia galleries including photographs and videos documenting the activities and research associated with the campaign.
