Hithadhoo Medhu MP Ahmed Azan Defends MP Salary, Highlights Financial Strain of Constituent Demands

Politics ·
Ahmed Azan, the Member of Parliament for the Hithadhoo Medhu Dhaaira constituency, has defended the salaries of parliamentarians amid recent public criticism. In a social media post, Azan explained that Maldivian MPs face unique financial and social pressures due to the country's small, close-knit island communities. According to Azan, MPs are constantly inundated with requests for financial assistance from constituents, making it extremely difficult to decline due to family and friendship ties. He stated that the net monthly take-home salary of MVR 77,000 is not simply for personal living expenses but must also cover contributions to a wide array of community activities, including island-level sports tournaments, school functions, National Day events, and Ramadan activities. While not a formal legal duty, he described this financial expectation from the public as a heavy social and psychological burden imposed by the political system. Drawing a contrast with other nations, Azan noted that foreign parliamentarians typically receive separate allocations for office expenses, travel, and staff, whereas Maldivian MPs must fund these from their own pockets. He pointed out that a single trip to some distant constituencies can cost over MVR 20,000, making regular visits a significant financial challenge. Azan argued that without any secondary business or income, many MPs struggle to manage their personal finances by the end of the month after meeting these constituency-related costs. He concluded that this reality is a crucial factor to consider when studying the financial situation and responsibilities of members of parliament.
