Hoarafushi Council President Suspended Without Evidence, Council Rejects Decision
Politics ·
The Hoarafushi Council has strongly criticized the Local Government Authority (LGA) for suspending its president, Mohamed Waheed, and several members without presenting evidence to support the violations cited in the LGA’s report. The Council has stated that it does not accept the decision. Waheed was suspended without pay and allowances for three months, while the remaining six councilors were cautioned. The LGA’s report highlighted seven violations, including financial irregularities and failure to adhere to procurement and land use regulations. Vice President Ahmed Imad stated that the LGA had not provided evidence to substantiate the claims and that the Council would not accept the action taken against its president. The violations cited include improper spending on events, procurement issues, and non-compliance with the Right to Information Act. The LGA has recommended disciplinary action against the Secretary General and other administrative staff for negligence. This is not the first time the LGA has taken action against councilors based on complaints.
