Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusan has called on every police officer to prioritize public confidence, warning that maintaining the integrity of the Maldives Police Service is essential to ensuring citizens do not lose hope in the justice system.
Speaking at a special ceremony to mark Maldives Police Service Day, Minister Ihusan expressed gratitude for the efforts of individual officers in maintaining stability across the nation's security, social, and economic sectors. He emphasized that the police service holds a proud history that must be protected through professional conduct.
Over the past two years, the Minister noted that the police have made significant strides in tackling major national threats. He specifically highlighted successful operations against drug trafficking, gang-related crimes, and the regulation of foreigners residing illegally in the Maldives.
However, the Minister identified the restoration and maintenance of public trust as the institution's greatest challenge. He asserted that this goal can only be achieved by eradicating the abuse of authority and corruption. According to Minister Ihusan, every officer bears the responsibility of upholding the institution's reputation to ensure the public feels secure in the services provided.
To support these operational goals, the government is investing heavily in modernization. Minister Ihusan revealed that 154 police infrastructure development projects are currently underway, with many slated for completion by the end of June next year. He further stated that the administration is prioritizing the integration of modern technology and intelligence resources to strengthen policing capabilities.
Closing his remarks, the Minister urged officers to adopt a proactive approach to crime prevention. He emphasized the role of the police in guiding Maldivian youth toward becoming law-abiding citizens, reminding officers that the public carries high expectations for the service that must not be disappointed.
