HPA Extends Deadline for World No Tobacco Day Award Nominations

Politics ·
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has extended the deadline for nominations for the World No Tobacco Day Awards, granting more time for individuals and organizations to be recognized for their contributions to tobacco control. Originally set for May 3, the submission window has been pushed back to 2:00 PM on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. In a statement to PSM News, the HPA explained that the extension aims to encourage a higher volume of applications and ensure that a broader range of efforts in the fight against tobacco use are captured. Interested applicants must complete the official nomination form and submit it via email to mv.gov.hpa@tobaccofreemaldives. For further inquiries, the agency has directed the public to contact them at 3024500. World No Tobacco Day is observed globally every May 31 under the guidance of the World Health Organization (WHO). This year's campaign, themed “Unmasking the appeal – countering nicotine and tobacco addiction,” focuses on exposing the deceptive marketing and addictive nature of tobacco products. In the Maldives, the fight against nicotine addiction has gained significant momentum through aggressive policy shifts. The government has implemented a strict ban on the sale and use of electronic cigarettes and vapes, while simultaneously increasing taxes on tobacco products to curb consumption. These local efforts have earned international acclaim. Minister of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development, Ismail Shafeeu, recently highlighted that the WHO specifically praised the Maldives for introducing a generational ban on tobacco, a landmark move designed to protect future generations from nicotine dependence. The awards serve as a key component of the national strategy, not only rewarding past successes but incentivizing continued advocacy and innovation in public health across the atolls.
