HPA Urges Public Vigilance as Dengue and Respiratory Illnesses Surge During Holidays
Politics ·
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued a public health warning urging citizens and residents to take strict precautions against a rise in infectious diseases during the current holiday season. The agency reported an increase in dengue fever and respiratory illnesses, including influenza and the common cold, across the Maldives.
Of particular concern are several reported cases of measles within the Malé area. The HPA noted that the combination of international holiday travel, frequent visits to various islands, and large crowded gatherings has created an environment conducive to the rapid spread of these diseases.
To mitigate transmission, health authorities advise individuals experiencing fever or respiratory symptoms to remain at home and avoid public activities. Those whose symptoms worsen should seek medical attention promptly, while wearing masks during visits to healthcare facilities and avoiding the use of public transport. Furthermore, anyone suspected of having measles must isolate themselves until official test results are confirmed.
General preventative measures include maintaining hand hygiene and wearing masks in high-traffic areas such as airports, ferry terminals, and on public transport. The HPA also strongly encourages the public to ensure their vaccinations for preventable diseases are up to date.
To combat the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue, the agency recommends using mosquito repellents, wearing protective clothing, and utilizing mosquito nets. Residents are also urged to secure their doors and windows and proactively remove any standing water or breeding sites for mosquitoes around their homes.
The HPA concludes by urging the public to ignore rumors and rely exclusively on official government sources for accurate, health-related information to ensure community safety during the festive period.
