HPA Urges Umrah Returnees to Take Precautions Against Flu and Viral Fever
Health ·
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued a public advisory urging Maldivians returning from Umrah to take precautionary measures to prevent the spread of flu and viral fever. With schools closed, a significant number of individuals are currently traveling for Umrah, and health officials have noted that many pilgrims often fall ill upon returning to the Maldives or during their journey. The HPA has advised returnees to exercise extra care during the first days after their arrival. The agency recommended several precautionary steps, including covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, wearing masks during travel, and frequent handwashing with soap and water. Individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma were particularly urged to follow these guidelines. Additional advice from the HPA includes avoiding crowded places if symptomatic, refraining from close contact with children if unwell, and seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, or chest pain develop within 14 days of returning from Hajj or Umrah. Pilgrims were also advised to inform their healthcare providers of their recent travel history. The HPA outlined simple home-care steps for those experiencing cold symptoms, such as staying hydrated, resting adequately, and avoiding medications other than paracetamol unless prescribed by a doctor. According to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, 7,726 Maldivians traveled for Umrah between December and January, with pilgrims expected to begin returning next week. Health facilities may establish dedicated flu clinics during peak return periods to manage potential outbreaks effectively.
