HRCM Commends Smooth Meedhoo Council Election Despite Accessibility Concerns

World ·
The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has praised the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) for the orderly conduct of the voting process to elect the President of the Meedhoo Council. Monitoring teams from the HRCM observed polling and vote counting at three locations: two polling stations in Meedhoo, Dhaalu Atoll, and one in Malé City. In a formal statement, the commission described the proceedings as generally peaceful, secure, and smooth, affirming that the process upheld democratic standards. The HRCM highlighted that monitoring such elections is a core part of its legal mandate to ensure that voting remains free, fair, transparent, and credible. The commission extended its gratitude to the ECM, the Maldives Police Service, participating candidates, political parties, and the voters for their cooperation in maintaining a stable environment. Despite the overall success, the HRCM raised a critical concern regarding inclusivity. The commission noted that two polling centers in Meedhoo were not easily accessible for persons with disabilities, signaling a need for improved infrastructure in future electoral cycles to ensure every citizen can exercise their right to vote without barriers. Regardless of these accessibility issues, the commission concluded that the ECM managed the election in an effective and orderly manner. The vote was necessitated by a tie between the top candidates during the initial Local Council Elections, leading to this decisive round to determine the presidency of the Meedhoo Council.
