HRCM President Calls Whistleblowing Essential Tool for Fighting Institutional Corruption

The Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has reaffirmed that whistleblowing is the most effective instrument for dismantling corruption and establishing honest governance across the nation's institutions. Speaking at the Maldives National University (MNU) auditorium to mark World Whistleblowers Day on June 23, HRCM President Dr. Aishath Rameela emphasized the necessity of protecting individuals who risk their personal security to expose wrongdoing. She described the act of whistleblowing as a significant national sacrifice that serves the broader public interest. "It is in the interest of the whole country to expose unwanted and illegal activities in society," Dr. Rameela stated. "It is not just about sharing information. Whistleblowing ensures the interest of the country and the security of state property." To address the risks associated with reporting misconduct, Dr. Rameela noted that the HRCM's Whistleblowers Protection Unit will continue to serve as a legal umbrella, providing essential safety and security for those who speak out against institutional abuse. Adding to the discourse, Transparency Maldives Executive Director Aishath Rizna highlighted the critical role whistleblowers play in identifying systemic failures. Rizna argued that strengthening legal protections and simplifying the reporting process would encourage more citizens to come forward with evidence of fraud and corruption. "Strong legal systems are established, society is made aware and works together. An easier system for those who speak out will facilitate the reporting of cases," Rizna explained. The event concluded with a high-level panel discussion involving the HRCM, Transparency Maldives, the Victim Protection Unit, and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The ceremony also recognized and awarded winners of competitions held in honor of Whistleblower Day, highlighting a collective push toward greater transparency in the Maldives.
