The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has appealed to the public and media not to disseminate personal information or photos that could undermine the dignity of victims or expose them to further harm in connection with the ongoing investigation into a gang rape case in a southern atoll. In a post on X today, HRCM urged that no details that could compromise the victims' dignity or lead to further victimization be circulated on social media or in newspapers. The Commission also called for a swift investigation and for those responsible to be brought to justice. This appeal comes after a report on Monday concerning a 22-year-old Maldivian woman who was allegedly gang-raped and minors who were sexually abused and exploited. Police have arrested nine Maldivian men in connection with the case, and a special team from Male' has been sent to the island where the incident occurred. Police stated that the investigation is being treated as a serious matter.
