The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced that 55 hectares of land have been successfully reclaimed as part of the Hulhumalé Phase 3 development project. With 87% of the reclamation work already completed, a total of 63 hectares is expected to be reclaimed. The project has gained momentum in recent weeks, with an average of one hectare being reclaimed each day. Additional dredgers have been deployed to speed up the process, with the majority of the dredging equipment arriving earlier this month. The initial land reclamation for Phase 3 began in early September, but the project was temporarily halted to revise Hulhumalé’s master plan. Reclamation resumed on November 10, 2026. The government is also working on solutions to address the flooding issues in Hulhumalé, including the reclamation of additional areas such as Girifaru Lagoon, Gulheefalhu, and Uthuruthilafalhu. The aim is to provide residents with better housing opportunities and alleviate overcrowding.
