Politics ·
The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has announced that over 30 hectares of land have been successfully dredged in the Hulhumale Phase III reclamation project, marking significant progress in addressing Male's housing shortage.
Dredging operations resumed on November 10 after a temporary halt and accelerated significantly on November 28 with the deployment of two dredgers working simultaneously. The project is under the direct supervision of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who is prioritizing expedited housing development in the Male' area. Capital Marine and Civil Construction (CMC) is handling the project execution.
The Phase III project aims to reclaim a total of 63 hectares, with completion expected before year-end. Currently, a 22,000 CBM dredger from Netherlands-based Boskalis is being utilized for the operations. Once Phase III concludes, the dredging equipment will be relocated to Gulhifalhu for reclamation works there, which are projected to finish within a few months.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to alleviate housing pressures in Male' City, with over 1,600 hectares being reclaimed across five different areas. The comprehensive plan includes 277 hectares from Gulhifalhu and an equivalent 277 hectares from Hulhumale Phase I. Additional acceleration efforts are also underway at Ras Male' to ensure timely completion of all reclamation projects.
