Human Rights Commission Calls for Collective Action to Improve Workplace Safety

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has called for a unified societal effort to strengthen occupational health and safety, warning that worker safety can only be guaranteed through collective action. Speaking at the launch of the HRCM-CSO Partnership Forum, Vice President Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood highlighted a concerning rise in cases related to workplace safety. He emphasized that the forum's focus on "Occupational Health and Safety" is critical given the current increase in reported risks and incidents affecting workers across the country. Shafeeq asserted that addressing safety risks requires an informed community and the active contribution of all stakeholders. He identified civil society organizations (CSOs) as essential partners in this mission, noting their pivotal role in disseminating information, promoting fundamental human rights, and advocating for enhanced worker protections. The partnership forum is designed as a strategic platform to identify the specific challenges workers face and to generate innovative solutions for improving safety standards. Shafeeq urged government agencies and private stakeholders to engage actively with the initiative to ensure that existing worker safety laws are not only maintained but strictly implemented. According to the HRCM, the primary objective of the forum is to gather direct feedback from various associations to better understand the evolving risks inherent in different industries. The commission stated that these insights will be instrumental in proposing necessary amendments to national laws and safety regulations. The inaugural forum of the year brought together 30 key stakeholders, including representatives from various non-governmental organizations. The event featured a series of panel discussions and presentations aimed at diagnosing systemic failures in workplace safety. The HRCM has announced that the next partnership forum is scheduled to take place in September to continue this dialogue.
