Ibrahim Shiuree Resigns as Managing Director of Visit Maldives Corporation
World ·
Ibrahim Shiuree has resigned from his position as Managing Director of the Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), the state-owned entity responsible for marketing and promoting the nation’s tourism industry. The announcement was made on 24 August.
No official reason was provided for Shiuree's departure. His exit marks a sudden transition for the agency, which is tasked with maintaining the Maldives' competitive edge as a global luxury travel destination.
Appointed on 13 June 2024, Shiuree brought a specialized background in strategic communication to the role. He holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing and a master’s degree in public relations, qualifications that informed his approach to the country's tourism branding. Before his leadership at VMC, he gained significant governance experience serving on the Board of Directors for both the Maldives Hajj Corporation and the Maldives Association of Construction Industry (MACI).
During his brief tenure at the helm of VMC, Shiuree focused on modernizing the Maldives' outreach strategies. He oversaw the implementation of targeted digital campaigns and worked to expand partnerships with international travel operators to increase visitor arrivals. His efforts also included initiatives to diversify the tourism product, moving beyond traditional luxury resorts to showcase a broader range of experiences within the archipelago.
Visit Maldives continues to operate its global marketing strategies as the government seeks to attract new markets and sustain the growth of the tourism sector, which remains the primary driver of the Maldivian economy.
