India Advances Military Self-Reliance with Domestic Aircraft Carrier and Fighter Jets
Politics ·
India is significantly reducing its reliance on foreign arms imports by advancing indigenous defense manufacturing, a strategic move to bolster national security and economic growth. Driven by the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) initiative, the country is developing military platforms tailored to its unique operational environments, from the Himalayas to the Indian Ocean.
A flagship achievement is the INS Vikrant, an indigenously designed and built aircraft carrier commissioned in 2022. This vessel enables India to project power globally and places it among few nations capable of constructing such complex ships. In aviation, the Light Combat Aircraft 'Tejas' showcases growing aerospace prowess, serving as an agile multi-role fighter for air-to-air and ground strikes.
On land, the 'Arjun' Main Battle Tank exemplifies domestic innovation with advanced systems for diverse conditions. Beyond these projects, a collaborative ecosystem of public and private firms produces helicopters, drones, and sophisticated weaponry, fueling private sector expansion and creating high-skilled jobs.
This push for self-reliance acts as an economic engine, fostering innovation and sending a clear message of strategic autonomy. India aims to achieve complete defense self-sufficiency by 2047, enhancing its capability to defend itself on its own terms amid regional and global uncertainties.
