India and Maldives Prioritize Infrastructure and Human Development in Strategic Partnership

India and the Maldives are focusing on infrastructure and human development as the primary pillars of their bilateral cooperation, according to Indian High Commissioner G Balasubramaniam. Speaking in an interview with PSM News, the High Commissioner emphasized that the development partnership between the two nations has grown significantly, particularly as they mark 60 years of diplomatic ties. A key highlight of the current cooperation is the commitment to community wellness, recently underscored by the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to equip fitness centers across 42 islands. These initiatives, including the donation of sports equipment, are designed to improve public health and strengthen social cohesion within island communities. Human resource development remains a cornerstone of the relationship. Through the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme, more than 1,600 Maldivians receive professional training in India annually, enhancing the capacity of various government institutions across the archipelago. On the infrastructure front, India continues to support several high-impact projects critical to the Maldives' connectivity and urban development. These include the Greater Male’ Connectivity Project, the Hanimaadhoo and Gan Airport expansions, and essential road and drainage developments in Addu City. Beyond large-scale infrastructure, India has implemented 56 high-impact community development projects across the Maldives. These initiatives, executed in three phases, represent a total investment of approximately USD 23 million. To date, 24 of these projects have been completed and officially inaugurated, providing tangible benefits to local populations. The High Commissioner reiterated that this multifaceted approach—combining large-scale engineering projects with grassroots community support and educational training—ensures that the partnership delivers both immediate relief and long-term sustainable growth for the Maldivian people.
