India has stated that it will closely monitor the agreements signed between the Maldives and Pakistan during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's recent visit to Pakistan, and will take any necessary steps regarding them.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said New Delhi is watching the developments very closely. "There have been agreements signed between the two countries. We are monitoring those very closely and if any steps need to be taken in that regard, we will take them," Jaiswal said in Hindi.
President Muizzu made an official visit to Pakistan from October 20 to 23, during which the Maldives signed 20 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Pakistan. During the trip, the President also met with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Ahmed Munir. Pakistan also conveyed its stance on Kashmir to President Muizzu.
Following President Muizzu's assumption of office, India has provided the Maldives with $1.5 billion in loans and credit facilities, including a currency swap agreement. Additionally, India paid $42.8 million in interest on $200 million in Treasury bills sold by the Maldives.
