Indian Community in Maldives Donates Blood to Mark 80th Independence Day

Fifty-eight volunteers donated life-saving blood during a community drive organized to celebrate India’s 80th Independence Day in the Maldives. The initiative was a joint effort by the High Commission of India, the Indian Cultural Center, and the Overseas Tamil Welfare Association (OTWA). Hosted at Orange Hiyaa in Hulhumalé, the venue was selected to ensure easy access for Indian expatriates working throughout the Greater Malé region. Beyond the celebratory nature of the event, organizers aimed to promote the importance of voluntary blood donation and cultivate a spirit of social service and friendship within the community. An OTWA spokesperson told PSM News that securing diverse blood types remains a consistent challenge for patients in need. They emphasized that such drives serve as a vital reminder of shared humanity and provide critical support to the healthcare system by increasing available blood supplies. The High Commission of India stated that these annual blood donation drives have become a cornerstone of its outreach programs. The mission consistently sees strong participation from Indian nationals residing in the Maldives, reflecting a deep-seated commitment to community welfare. By bringing together 58 donors, the camp did more than commemorate India's independence; it reinforced the enduring bonds of solidarity and cooperation between the Indian expatriate community and the Maldivian people.
