India's $500 Million Thila-Male’ Bridge Nears Completion With Strong Government Support

The Thila-Male’ Bridge project is nearing completion, marking a significant milestone in regional connectivity and bilateral cooperation between India and the Maldives. Indian Ambassador G. Balasubramanian confirmed that the project is progressing rapidly due to strong coordination and support from the Maldivian government. Once completed, the expansive network will link Male’, Vilimale’, Thilafushi, and Gulhifalhu. The project comprises approximately 6.7 kilometers of bridges, causeways, and connecting highways, designed to streamline transport and logistics between the capital and its surrounding industrial and residential hubs. Financed at approximately USD 500 million, the venture consists of a USD 100 million grant and a USD 400 million line of credit provided by India, with additional funding contributed by the Maldivian government. The Ambassador described the bridge as one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects outside its own borders. During a historic walkthrough of the bridge connecting Male’ and Vilimale’ on Sunday, Ambassador Balasubramanian accompanied President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to inspect the progress. Speaking to the media, the Ambassador expressed his satisfaction with the project's trajectory and highlighted the collaborative spirit between the two nations. He specifically credited the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and the dedicated efforts of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in ensuring the project remains on track for delivery. The bridge is expected to drastically reduce travel time and fuel costs while boosting the economic integration of the Greater Male’ region.
