Inflated Water Bills in Amaan Udhares Flats: FDC to Bear the Cost, Says MWSC
Politics ·
The Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has clarified that the unusually high water bills reported in some of the 4,000 flats built by Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) in Amaan Udhares are the responsibility of FDC, not the tenants. MWSC Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed stated that the meters in these flats remain registered under FDC, and the charges reflect water used during testing and commissioning of the apartments. Matheen emphasized that FDC must clear these outstanding amounts before the meters are transferred to the names of flat owners, assuring residents they will not be liable for the inflated bills. Several tenants who moved into one of the Amaan Udhares towers in November reported bills exceeding MVR 7,000, while others were around MVR 4,000. MWSC has advised tenants seeking clarification to contact the company directly. FDC Managing Director Hamdhan Shakeel has committed to investigating complaints regarding the high bills. Residents are currently occupying the 14th tower of the Amaan Udhares flats, and rent payments will begin after three months of occupation.
