International Seminar Targets Financial Sustainability of Maldives' Social Security Systems

Politics ·
An international seminar focused on bolstering the financial sustainability and institutional capacity of social security systems has commenced in the Maldives. Organized by the International Social Security Association (ISSA) in collaboration with the Maldives Pension Administration Office, the two-day event aims to modernize the frameworks that protect citizens' long-term financial well-being. Attorney General Ahmed Usham officiated the opening ceremony at Crossroads, joined by ISSA officials, Pension Office Chief Operating Officer Mariyam Shiuna, and representatives from various state institutions. The gathering serves as a strategic hub for member countries and organizations from Asia, the Pacific, and Eurasia to exchange innovations and regional best practices. The seminar addresses critical systemic pressures facing the Asian region, including the challenges of ageing populations, volatile labour markets, and overarching economic uncertainties. By analyzing these trends, participants seek to develop more resilient systems capable of weathering global crises without compromising service delivery. Experts have identified three primary pillars for the discussions: increasing public participation in social security, adapting to shifting employment landscapes, and implementing rigorous measures to combat fraud and misuse. A significant portion of the agenda is dedicated to cost-reduction reforms, specifically targeting the rising expenditures associated with an ageing demographic. Beyond financial metrics, the Pension Office highlighted the seminar's focus on improving institutional governance. This includes the integration of digitalization to streamline operations and the more effective deployment of human resources to reduce administrative burdens. By fostering collaboration between diverse member states, the Maldives Pension Administration Office aims to strengthen the regional social security architecture. The seminar provides a vital platform for technical knowledge transfer, ensuring that the Maldives remains aligned with international standards of governance and financial resilience in the social security sector.
