Islamic Affairs Minister Warns Against Neglecting Critical Training for Young Khateebs

World ·
Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, has warned that failing to prioritize the training of khateebs could result in "unforeseen damage" to the nation's Islamic foundations. Speaking at the conclusion of the fourth round of the youth khateeb training programme, the Minister emphasized that cultivating capable religious leaders is an urgent necessity for the Maldives. The latest cohort saw 82 participants complete their certification, bringing the total number of certified young khateebs to over 600. Launched under the administration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the priority programme aims to resolve critical shortages of island imams while ensuring that religious traditions are upheld for future generations. Minister Shaheem underscored the profound responsibility held by those leading the community. Highlighting that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ prayed for the understanding of imams, he stated that these leaders must serve as exemplary role models in their conduct, attire, and daily interactions. He stressed that the role requires more than just knowledge, demanding a commitment to diligence and meticulous preparation. "It is essential to respect time, demonstrate diligence, and thoroughly practice and prepare prior to delivering the sermon," Minister Shaheem remarked. He further noted that sermons should be delivered with elegance, utilizing proper Tajweed when reciting Quranic verses and Hadiths. He described the act of leading Friday congregations—a symbol of global Islamic unity—as both a distinct honor and a noble responsibility. Beyond khateeb training, the ministry is aggressively expanding its Quran memorization infrastructure. The government has set ambitious targets to certify 1,000 youth khateebs and 500 Huffaz (those who have memorized the entire Quran). Currently, over 2,000 students are enrolled in classes, and 310 Huffaz have already been recognized. To celebrate these educational milestones and commemorate the 900th anniversary of the Maldives embracing Islam, the ministry will host a special symposium. The event will feature Sheikh Dr Yasser Al-Dosari, an Imam of the Makkah Grand Mosque, as the guest of honor.
