Islamic Minister Threatens Resignation if Ras Malé Deal with UAE’s Eagle Hills Is Signed
Politics ·
A major rift has emerged within the Maldivian government over the proposed agreement to hand over most of the Ras Malé development project to the UAE-based Eagle Hills company. Islamic Affairs Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaleem Ali Saeed has confirmed to Raajje MV that he will immediately resign if the Muizzu government signs the deal with Eagle Hills.
According to a reliable source, Minister Dr. Shaleem has clearly stated his opposition to the signing of this agreement. The controversy has sparked widespread debate among religious scholars, former ministers, and the general public, with concerns also being raised within the government itself. Former cabinet ministers have also spoken out against the transaction.
The deal involves leasing a large portion of land in the Ras Malé area—currently being reclaimed using taxpayer funds—to Eagle Hills for 99 years without any immediate compensation. Economists and financial experts are calling for an independent audit to assess the economic benefits and legal validity of the agreement before practical work begins.
Further controversy has emerged after it was revealed that during a visit by Eagle Hills owner Mohamed Alabbas to the Maldives, several million dollars were allegedly given to a person named "Abdulla" in a meeting with prominent businessmen and senior government officials.
Raajje MV sought comments from Minister Dr. Shaleem but received no response.
