Islamic Minister Urges Media to Balance Press Freedom with Legal and Religious Limits

Freedom of expression in the Maldives must be exercised within the boundaries of Islam and national law, according to the Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowment, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed.
In a recent social media statement, Minister Shaheem affirmed that the Constitution of the Maldives fully guarantees freedom of expression. He emphasized that this freedom is a national value that should be protected and strengthened, expressing his desire for the Maldives to be recognized globally for upholding high standards of press freedom.
While acknowledging that journalism is a vital tool for combating corruption, injustice, and unfairness, the Minister warned against the misuse of these liberties. He stated that using the press to defame individuals, bully others, or damage reputations outside the limits of the Constitution and Islamic teachings could lead to societal harm.
Minister Shaheem specifically cautioned against the weaponization of journalism as a political tool, arguing that ethical and professional standards are essential for maintaining national stability and security.
Highlighting the priorities of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's administration, the Minister pointed to the President's weekly press briefings and his encouragement for ministers to maintain transparency as evidence of the government's commitment to media access.
However, the Minister expressed concern over recent trends among certain media outlets and social media accounts. He alleged an unprecedented rise in targeted attacks against President Muizzu, his family, and various ministers. While maintaining that criticism of government policy is acceptable, he insisted that personal attacks and slander are prohibited.
"Insulting reputations, slander, defamation, the use of abusive language, and the spread of false information are all actions prohibited in the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet," the Minister stated, noting that protecting an individual's honor is a primary objective of Islamic Sharia.
Concluding his remarks, Minister Shaheem called for a culture of responsible journalism based on objective thinking and constructive criticism that serves the public interest while preserving the dignity of the individual.
