Island-Bound Travellers Brave Monsoon Weather for Traditional Eid al-Adha Celebrations
Politics ·
Thousands of residents are journeying from the capital to their home islands for Eid al-Adha, maintaining a cherished Maldivian tradition despite challenging weather conditions brought on by the southwest monsoon.
Recent activity at the Male’ jetty area confirms a significant exodus from the city, as families seek to reunite for the holiday. The movement comes despite several warnings from the Maldives Meteorological Service, which has cautioned against rough seas and heavy rainfall, particularly in the central regions of the archipelago.
Authorities have urged travelers to exercise extreme caution during sea voyages. While forecasts indicate unfavorable weather will persist for the next three days in central areas, conditions are expected to be more stable in the southern atolls, facilitating safer travel for those heading south.
The celebrations reveal a distinct contrast between urban and island life. In the atolls, Eid is marked by vibrant community-led festivities. Island residents have spent days preparing streets and grounds for traditional activities, including the rhythmic beats of boduberu performances and competitive games of Koadi cutting. These events serve as vital social anchors, drawing participants of all ages and strengthening communal bonds through shared cultural heritage.
Meanwhile, the Greater Male’ area has adopted a more structured approach to the holiday. Organized “Eid Haveeru” events are being held at major hubs, including Republic Square in Male’, Hulhumale’ Central Park, Hiyaa Park, and the Villimale’ Football Stadium. These venues host a variety of family-oriented activities, entertainment stalls, and games managed by government agencies and corporate organizations.
Despite the difference in scale and style—ranging from the ancestral traditions of the islands to the modern event hubs of the capital—the nationwide mood remains one of celebration and unity as the country marks the occasion.
