Japan Gifts $4.3 Million in Disaster Response Equipment to the Maldives

Politics ·
The Japanese government has provided disaster response equipment worth USD 4.3 million to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to bolster the Maldives' capacity to handle emergencies across its islands. The equipment was officially handed over during a ceremony at the NDMA headquarters. The donation was presented by the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Ishigami Rumiko, and received by NDMA Chief Executive Hisan Hassan. This contribution was made under Japan’s grant aid through the Economic and Social Development Programme, a framework designed to support sustainable growth and resilience in partner nations. The grant reflects the ongoing diplomatic and developmental partnership between Tokyo and Malé. According to the NDMA, the new equipment will significantly improve the government's ability to provide rapid assistance during flooding and fire crises. Given the geographical dispersion of the Maldivian atolls, specialized response gear is critical for ensuring that remote communities receive timely help during natural disasters or accidents. The NDMA expressed its gratitude to the Japanese government for the donation, noting that the enhanced resources will strengthen the national disaster management framework and save lives by reducing response times during critical emergencies.
