The People's Majlis' Judiciary Committee has approved investigating how Abdullah Ibrahim (Abucha), alleged to be the main leader of a drug trafficking network operating over a wide area in Addu City, was released from detention by the Parole Board while serving a 25-year prison sentence. The committee passed this at today's meeting, held on 14 October 2026, in connection with a matter submitted to the Majlis by MDP Galolhu North constituency MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudhu), who had requested the Majlis' concerned committee to investigate after concerns arose over Abucha's release. Abucha was sentenced to 25 years in prison in the case of bringing more than 80 kilograms of drugs into the Maldives and was released on parole on the 1st of this month. At the Judiciary Committee's meeting held today, PNC Hulhudhoo constituency MP Mohamed Shaheed (Shaadh) submitted a motion to find out how Abucha was released and to summon the Parole Board Committee that decided to release him. However, because Parole Board members in that case had been removed, PNC Fares Maatoda constituency MP Ashraf Rasheed submitted that the concerned authorities be instructed to send to the committee, in writing, how the incident had taken place. This submission was supported by Vilufushi constituency MP Hasan Vaheed. Supporting this submission, the members present said that after examining what happened in the case, even though the board members have been removed, strict action must be taken against those who were members of the Parole Board at the time if there was any negligence.
