Kolhufushi Residents Frustrated as Housing Units Remain Without Essential Services Over a Year After Completion
Politics ·
Residents of Kolhufushi island in Meemu Atoll are voicing growing frustration as over 100 housing units, completed in 2024 and formally handed over in February 2025, still lack essential services such as water, electricity, and sewerage connections. Mohamed Ihusaan, an MDP National Congress member representing the constituency, has accused the current administration of negligence, citing that utilities were recently provided to a PNC-affiliated commercial unit while residents remain unable to occupy their homes. The project to establish water and sewerage networks was awarded to Fenaka Corporation in December 2025, with a 20-week completion timeline. The development, valued at MVR 11,435,789.59, has yet to address the urgent needs of residents. Additionally, Ihusaan highlighted stalled progress on promised projects, including land reclamation and a ring road around the island, despite pledges by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
