Komandoo Health Centre Launches Dialysis Unit, Easing Burden for Atoll Residents

Dialysis services are now available at the Komandoo Health Centre, providing a vital lifeline for patients with kidney disease in the Shaviyani Atoll. The service was officially inaugurated by Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim in a ceremony attended by local council members and health officials. Komandoo becomes the 11th island to receive dialysis services since the current administration took office. The treatment, which filters waste and excess fluid from the blood, is essential for patients with significantly impaired kidney function, typically requiring sessions of four hours, two to three times per week. Minister Nazim stated the new unit will serve not only Komandoo residents but also people from neighboring islands. "The dialysis service will benefit the people of Komandoo as well as other islands in the atoll," he said. He emphasized that the local availability will relieve the considerable burden on patients and families who previously had to undertake long and costly journeys, often to the capital Malé, for treatment. The newly established unit is equipped to treat two patients simultaneously and includes a dedicated isolation room for patients with specific medical needs. This initiative is a key part of the government's broader plan to establish dialysis services in every atoll during its current term, aiming to decentralize advanced healthcare and make it accessible nationwide. This expansion of specialized care runs parallel to wider government reforms to strengthen the healthcare system. These include changes to the Aasandha national health insurance scheme and updates to health legislation and regulations, all intended to ensure sustainable and quality care for all Maldivian citizens.
