Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital to Open New Temporary ER in Two Days
Politics ·
The Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital (KRH) will open a new temporary Emergency Room within two days, marking a crucial upgrade for emergency medical services in the northern Maldives. This interim facility is designed to streamline patient care while a permanent ER building is constructed on the hospital grounds.
The current emergency room operates from inside the main hospital, a layout that has hindered swift patient admission and immediate treatment. The new temporary ER, located adjacent to the Saturday market, allows ambulances direct access to its entrance. Hospital officials expect this to dramatically speed up emergency response times and improve workflow for medical staff.
Final preparations are underway to transition patient care to the new structure, which is equipped with six beds. Workers are installing a dedicated nurse station and essential patient care facilities to ensure full operational capability from the first day.
As a tertiary-level hospital under government development, KRH is a vital lifeline for residents of Haa Dhaalu Atoll and neighboring atolls. Demand is high; in the first three months of this year alone, its ER treated 1,679 patients, following 6,591 treatments throughout the previous year.
The upcoming permanent ER will be a 13,500-square-foot building. The hospital confirms the project has been awarded to a contractor, with work set to begin imminently. This development is part of a broader expansion that includes upgrading the dialysis unit from four to fourteen beds and constructing a new isolation facility with fourteen private rooms, significantly boosting healthcare capacity for the northern region.
