Kulhudhuffushi Residents Return Home as Weather Clears After Floods Displace 140
Environment ·
The Kulhudhuffushi City Council announced today that residents who were moved to temporary shelters due to severe flooding are now returning home as weather conditions improve. Heavy rains and flooding in recent days forced over 140 people from Kulhudhuffushi City into temporary accommodation, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
Council member Ibrahim Ahmed said that the weather has cleared, and cleanup operations are underway for flooded homes. "We moved people to guesthouses temporarily. Now cleaning work is ongoing. Once the houses are cleaned, people can return," he said. However, he noted that some houses remain heavily damaged and may not be habitable immediately.
The NDMA reported that seven pumps were deployed in Kulhudhuffushi to drain floodwaters. The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has warned of continued heavy rain and thunderstorms in northern and central atolls, and advised caution for travellers at sea. The latest weather system has caused damage across parts of Haa Dhaalu and Haa Alif atolls.
