Kulhudhuffushi City’s water supply will shift to renewable energy during the first quarter of 2026, according to Abdul Matheen Mohamed, Managing Director of Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC). The agreement to convert the city’s water system to solar power was signed in June 2025 between MWSC and Japan’s Kanadevia. The project will utilize a full solar system combined with a battery storage solution, eliminating the need for diesel. The desalination plant, powered by the solar system, will produce 500 cubic meters of water daily. The installation includes a 500-kilowatt solar system and a 1450-kilowatt battery storage system. Matheen emphasized that this transition will reduce fuel imports, saving foreign currency, improving energy security, and minimizing environmental impact.
