Land Reclamation and Harbor Expansion Underway in R. Meedhoo
Local News ·
Land reclamation and harbor expansion work is underway in R. Meedhoo, an island in Raa Atoll with a population of around 2,300. The project, undertaken by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), involves reclaiming 14 hectares of land and expanding the island's harbor. The harbor expansion includes a 500-foot long and 250-foot wide basin, a 125-meter long and 6-meter wide jetty, two 15-meter bridges, and a ramp. The total cost of the harbor works is 44 million rufiyaa. According to MTCC, the aim is to bring a dredger by the end of this year to begin the reclamation work. The current harbor is heavily congested due to cargo vessels, fishing dinghies, dive boats, and other craft. The project also includes protection works such as geo-bags and a boundary wall for the reclaimed area.
