Physical works have commenced on the reclamation of land required for the development of the long-delayed Dhidhdhoo Airport and other essential infrastructure in HA. Dhidhdhoo. Dhidhdhoo Council President Abdulla Rasheed confirmed that the reclamation operations at the island’s westside lagoon began at approximately 4:00 am on Monday morning. The project, managed by the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), aims to reclaim 110 hectares of land for the airport and related facilities. During a visit to Dhidhdhoo in late January last year, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu emphasized the airport's significance as a central part of his administration’s regional development plans. He assured the community that physical works would progress rapidly, with plans to inaugurate the airport upon its completion. The airport development project was awarded to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) on April 19, 2024, for MVR 257.21 million, but practical work had yet to commence until now. Currently, Dhidhdhoo relies on Hanimaadhoo International Airport for air travel, with the journey between the two islands taking about 15 minutes by boat. The commencement of reclamation marks a significant step forward in the island’s infrastructure development.
