Large Congregations Mark Eid al-Adha Celebrations Across the Maldives

Thousands of worshippers across the Maldives gathered in large congregations to observe Eid al-Adha prayers, with celebrations spanning the atolls and the Greater Malé region. In the Greater Malé area, the prayers were concentrated at four primary venues to accommodate the crowds: the Maafannu Stadium in Malé, the Vilimalé football ground, the synthetic track in Hulhumalé Phase One, and the sports arena in Hulhumalé Phase Two. These open-air gatherings have become a staple of recent Eid celebrations, fostering a sense of community and shared spirituality. To ensure accessibility for all residents, the government and religious authorities arranged for prayers at 25 additional mosques alongside the main venues. This included 17 mosques in Malé, seven in Hulhumalé, and one in Vilimalé, allowing worshippers to choose between the large-scale assemblies and more intimate mosque settings. Across the archipelago, participants expressed warmth and gratitude, extending greetings to family and friends as they marked the significant religious occasion. The atmosphere remained celebratory and peaceful, reflecting the deep cultural and religious ties that bind the island communities. A notable trend in recent years is the increasing involvement of the government’s youth khateeb training programme. This initiative aims to empower the next generation of religious leaders by giving them the opportunity to lead major prayers. This year, the congregation in Hulhumalé Phase Two was led by Al-Hafiz Mohamed Hanoon Hussain, a young khateeb from the programme. The shift toward large-scale congregational prayers and the integration of young imams signal an evolving approach to religious practice in the Maldives, blending traditional observance with new opportunities for youth leadership.
